Heart of the Matter Community Discussion: A Conversation with Local Artists

Join Friends of the Arts and the Community Education Advisory Council for a panel discussion with four amazing local artists. In addition to live performances and exhibits, you'll hear from these artists about what fuels their creative work, how they navigate the creative process, and how their artwork makes a difference in our communities. Moderated by Jamie Marshall, executive director of Friends of the Arts.

Meet the artists:

Dan Israel is a longtime fixture on the Minneapolis music scene. He was the first guest on 89.3 The Current’s “Local Show,” won Song of the Year in the 2005 Songwriter of the Year in 2006 at the Minnesota Music Awards. He formed Dan Israel and The Cultivators in 1996 and has released 14 critically acclaimed albums. His 14th album, You're Free, was released in the spring of 2018, solidifying "Israel's standing as one of the country's best singer/songwriters working today," according to No Depression magazine. In November 2018, Israel embarked on a monthlong tour of Europe, with a stream of well-received shows in Germany, The Netherlands, and Belgium, and even included a house concert in Stockholm, Sweden.

Xiaojie Liu is a freelance illustrator who was born and raised in Enshi, China, received a BA in illustration from the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts in 2015, and an MFA in illustration from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2018. Liu’s artistic focus is on children’s illustration, editorial illustration and surface design for a wide range of projects including children’s books, publications, magazines, branding, and packaging. She combines mixed media and materials to create illustrations, which include digital and hand drawing, paper cutting, clay, and fabrics.

Mari Harris is an award-winning Singer/Songwriter, Actress, Speaker, and a Lover of Life with a powerful commitment to provide entertainment, fun, empowerment, healing, and Love through the Arts. Mari performs nationally—singing, acting, and speaking on stages, in concert halls, on television, the internet, and the big screen—exciting and inspiring audiences with both her Voice and her Presence.

Stacia Goodman is a professional mosaic artist who specializes in site-specific, often large-in-scale mosaic artwork and installations in public and commercial spaces. Her work features refreshing combinations of tile, art glass, mirror, and objects in educational, transportation, healthcare, municipal and retail settings, among others.

Event produced in partnership with the Community Education Advisory Council, who advises Community Education staff on its programs and is a space where people work together on community needs.
